What is Can & Do Framework?

This tool is a way of reflecting on team members (or yourself). It is a way of thinking about performance and understanding what is going on for an individual. The two aspects are about skill/competence (how good the person is at doing that thing) and motivation (how much positive energy the person has for the work).

What is an example use of Can & Do Framework?

This is useful as a reflective tool to use personally and with others to think about where a member of staff is ‘at’ and how best to support them. In honesty, it is most likely to be used when someone is not performing at the level  you want for them – and it is useful to understand if that is about skill, or motivation (or both!). This analysis helps us then work out the best way to support them to improve.
