Lancasterian Primary School

State Primary

Approach overview

Lancasterian Primary is a safe and welcoming learning community where we all aim high, everyone is included and creativity is valued. We are a two-form entry school in the heart of Tottenham, a busy, exciting and energetic part of London, and we are proud of our diverse, welcoming and enthusiastic learning community. In our vision we state that we will try to make a fairer society and that, in order to do this, we will become the best school we can; we persistently seek to find new ways to improve and enhance our offer to our children and the local community, working closely with pupils, parents & carers and other stakeholders to ensure that we are getting the provision right. Our values of inclusion, lifelong learning, growth mindset, integrity, high aspirations and respect underpin everything that we do.

Signature practices

  • Vision and values: These drive all our work and are a regular, ‘live’ part of school life, not just something posted on our website, through our Values Family characters, My Values Journey Book reflective journals, and children as Values Ambassadors.
  • Exceptional early years provision for 2-4 year olds: We recognise that all children develop and learn at different rates and so our EYFS curriculum is designed flexibly to meet the needs of all individuals, through our skillful interactions and observations which lead to detailed next step planning.
  • The Lancs Way: We implement our curriculum through an adaptive teaching approach based on Rosenshine’s Principles, supported by Walkthrus, which provides an approach for planning each lesson, allowing for quizzing, checking for understanding, chunking the learning so there is not cognitive overload whilst providing scaffolding and extension so all children can access learning.
  • Reducing workload, ensuring wellbeing: We work collaboratively with staff, ensuring that improvements come through reflective self-assessment, meaningful discussions and clear next-steps action planning and our Staff Wellness Working Party meet half-termly to identify wellbeing issues and create solutions.

Why we joined the Next Big 10

We hadn’t reached out to look at practice in other schools for some time, and wanted to be more innovative and cutting-edge; Rethinking School offered what we were after.

I saw it as an opportunity to work in a new kind of way, collaboratively with my peers and I thought it would be inspiring to visit other innovative schools
