Approach overview

XP School in Doncaster is a progressive and innovative educational institution, part of the XP Multi Academy Trust.  At XP we teach through expeditions.  Our approach to learning draws on the inspiration from the principles of Expeditionary Learning (EL Education) and High Tech High – with world renowned educators Ron Berger and Jeff Robins offering critique and support with our school improvement and development. At XP we aim to develop students not only academically but also through their character and beautiful work.

XP School’s approach has gained widespread recognition for its ability to engage students deeply in learning, foster strong relationships, and cultivate a sense of purpose. The school’s focus on character and academic excellence has resulted in high levels of student satisfaction, parent approval, and positive outcomes for young people.

Signature practices

  • Project-based learning (expeditions): interdisciplinary, real-world projects known as expeditions which allow students to explore complex themes and solve real-world problems centered around a compelling question, and often serving a wider audience.
  • Character Development: emphasises the values of courage, respect, compassion, integrity, and craftsmanship  and quality with students engaged in activities that foster teamwork, leadership, and personal responsibility, preparing them to become ethical, thoughtful, and resilient individuals.
  • Crew culture: every student belongs to a small group led by a dedicated teacher who meet daily for reflection, relationship-building, and support, and emphasise mutual accountability and collaboration within the school community.
  • Authentic assessment: students showcase their learning through student-led conferences, presentations of learning, and portfolios, encouraging students to take ownership of their progress and allowing parents, teachers, and peers to engage in meaningful feedback.
  • Real-world purposeful connections: students engage with experts, local businesses, and community organisations through service learning, helping students see the relevance of their studies and preparing them for life beyond school.
  • Beautiful work and high standards: strong emphasis on craftsmanship and producing work of exceptional quality through draft, critique, and revision, fostering a mindset of persistence and excellence.
  • Learning outside the classroom: activities such as hiking, camping, and purposeful fieldwork build confidence, resilience, and a deeper connection to the environment.

XP School's testimonials

Why we joined the Next Big 10

As a forward thinking, internationally recognised school, I wanted to continue to be inspired by others. The opportunity to continue some of the leadership work I had started with Big Education and to bring along some of my team was not to be missed. I want to continue to develop future leaders who are inspired by innovative practice and are curious, activating a multi-faceted, rich and diverse curriculum.
Claira Salter, Principal
As a school very different to those we’re surrounded by, it can often feel like although we would like to (and do!) celebrate the work we are doing, we are regularly justifying the choices we make and the type of education we provide to young people in our area. It can feel as though you’re alone in your mission. Joining the Change Team has enabled us to have the opportunity to work with like minded professionals, reigniting our passion and commitment, whilst also supporting future changes at our own school. We are keen to get involved, upskill ourselves, promote change and hopefully influence many more schools to join us in ‘doing things differently’.
